85% renewable electricity
About 85% of New Zealand’s electricity generation is from renewable sources.[1] This is much higher than the OECD average of about 30%.[2] New Zealand’s renewable electricity sources include hydro, wind, geothermal and solar.
NET ZERO emissions by 2050
Government policy supports the move to renewable energy. In addition to the target of net zero emissions excluding biogenic methane by 2050, the Government is progressing with reforms to support renewable electricity generation as well as electricity distribution and transmission.[3,4]
65% Projected electricity demand growth by 2050
Demand for electricity is projected to grow by 65% by 2050.[5] A strong factor influencing future demand is industrial electrification initiatives, particularly in relation to the process heat and transportation sectors.
